First and foremost we believe the best benefit of DNA is knowing the unique Blueprint of our dogs. Paw print is able to look for Gene Mutations and markers in order to distinguish if a dog is Clear from Diseases or a Carrier. We do not eliminate carrier dogs from our breeding program as it is not good to "bottleneck" the genetics of the breed, but it does allow us to know how to properly match a "carrier" with a "clear" dog so as not to replicate a gene mutation that could be detrimental to the health of the dog. We are now seeing through studies that Colour can also contribute to other parts of the genetic makeup of a canine as well, not just the physical attributes. By colour testing our dogs, we are contributing to better understanding that science, and that excites us! We LOVE looking at Color DNA and trying to find the best match's for breeding. It's a fun surprise when we have a litter of puppies born and they are a beautiful array of colours! Black Dogs can make wonderful and healthy pets but Merles and Reds are head turners! And what Pet owner doesn't love getting stopped on the street or at the park and asked about their furry family member.
So this is where things can sometimes get, controversial? Where you looking on Kijiji or Next Day Pets and saw an ad that says Doodles For Sale? Did they claim that their dogs are Hypoallergenic? The reality is, NO DOG is what we call "Hypoallergenic". The protein that is in the dogs saliva and urine is what causes actual animal allergies to flair. There is a large misconception with this as people think that the dogs fur is what causes the allergy and we often hear as professionals from our clients that they had an experience where they purchased a puppy for a discounted price from a hobby breeder under the impression that it was a "hypoallergenic puppy", Only to get the pup home to deal with days and nights of difficulty due to allergies. Animal allergies can vary in severity and unfortunately some families may never be able to own a pet because of those allergies. But if the allergies are mild enough or only a histamine reaction to shedding fur than you can likely enjoy the blessing of owning a pet, so you want to KNOW that your purchasing and opening your home to a puppy who's furry coat isn't going to break your heart later. All hair and skin follicles die and shed themselves and regrow but through DNA science we can tell you if your dog is SD LOCUS clear (low shedder, the rate of follicle growth is MUCH slower) or IC LOCUS clear (poodle fleece like coat/ full curls) We also take this a step further and test the L locus (long hair/fluffy) and CU locus (curly hair) as we believe that this gives a much more accurate view of the overall coat type of the puppy.
Most Breeders have a place on their website listing their "Dams" and "Sires" that they use as Breeding dogs. We have chosen to do this a bit different. We want families to start thinking differently about how they are buying and for them to be completely educated on the overall health and well-being of the parentage of the puppy they are considering. Because of this, over time, we are going to be uploading ALL of our dogs DNA results and Profiles to Paw Print Pedigrees. Their profile will show a Photo and small write up of the dog as well as their DNA results published in entirety. We will also be uploading their Cardiac and Ortho results as we have digital copies of them. Non of the dogs that we use for breeding are bred based on their parents health. Even our puppies that we keep from our own litters are tested before being considered for breeding. Every time we DNA test and Health test our breeding dogs we are contributing to better understanding Canine Genetics.
