We are very passionate about genetics and how DNA can be a great tool for planning and identifying what can be bred for the desired results. We believe the best benefit of DNA is that it helps us understand the unique blueprint of each of our dogs. For this process, we use Paw Print Genetics, the definitive resource for canine genetic health.
Paw Print looks for gene mutations and markers to distinguish whether a dog is a carrier of disease or clear from disease. At YQL Doodles, we do not eliminate carrier dogs from our breeding program, as we feel it is not good to bottleneck the genetics of a breed. Instead, genetic profiling allows us to explore how to properly match a carrier dog with a clear dog, so as not to replicate a gene mutation that could be detrimental to the health of the dog.
In addition, we are now learning that colour can also contribute to the genetic makeup of a canine. By colour testing our dogs, we are contributing to better understanding that science, which is very exciting. We LOVE looking at colour DNA and trying to find the best matches for breeding. It's a fun surprise when we have a litter of puppies born and they are a beautiful array of colours. While same colour dogs can obviously be stunning, merles and reds can be absolute head turners. And what pet owner doesn't love getting stopped on the street or at the park and asked about the origins of their furry family member?
Knowing each dog’s DNA profile helps us better match them to a mate for the best possible puppies. Whether an Aussiedoodle, Bernedoodle, Sheepadoodle or one of our specially curated Mountain Doodles, our goal is to produce dogs free from genetic health issues and with the best coats possible, with little to no shedding. We want our puppies to live the longest life possible, with no underlying genetic issues. Active DNA profiling allows us to accomplish that goal. If interested, owners can have their puppy’s unique DNA samples transferred to them upon request.
We are committed to the health and overall well being of our puppies. Our aim is to upload the DNA and profiles of all of our dogs into Paw Print Pedigrees. Each profile will show a photo and biography of the dog, as well as their DNA results. We will also upload their cardiac and ortho results. None of the dogs we use for breeding are bred solely based on their parents’ legacy. Even the puppies we keep from our own litters are tested before being considered for breeding. Every time we DNA and health test our breeding dogs, we are contributing to better understanding canine genetics.
The reality is that no dog is truly hypoallergenic. Most people believe that it is a dog’s fur which causes animal allergies, when in fact, it is the protein in a dog’s saliva and urine which actually causes allergies to flair. Animal allergies vary in severity and for some people, even a “hypoallergenic” dog will pose a problem. If your allergies are mild enough though, or simply a histamine reaction to shedding fur, then knowing the genetics of your pet’s coat may help you decide what dog is the best fit for you. Knowing this before you bring your furry friend home is essential. Using DNA testing and our extensive experience, we test and analyze the coat of each puppy, so you have a much more accurate view of what to expect from your new furry family member.
