My love of the Group 7 (Herding) Dogs is really what got us here. I have always been drawn to all the Collies and Shepherds. These dogs were such a necessary part of Ranch life for me growing up. Although all of them were my friends, they were not allowed in our home. Dirty from Ranch life and shedding their coats, dogs were very rarely allowed inside. Fast forward to adulthood and being a parent, I was reunited with my childhood Border Collie shortly after my son was born. It was such a Blessing having her in our home (shedding fur and all) with our young son. She got to live out the last 6 years of her 20 years on this earth with our young family and our son and daughter got to know a little bit of my childhood and my love for the Dog & Pony. Shortly before we had to put our Kit down, My husband and I decided to begin to build a legacy of Beautiful Aussiedoodles starting with K'ani.
We knew after extensive research and conversations with specialists and geneticists that we did not want to breed doodles that were poodle crosses within the "Sporting & Non Sporting" Canine Groups. We were seeing personality and temperament issues in labradoodles and goldendoodles that were not consistent with what we felt made the best family pet. We saw the best parts of the Doodles we loved, was where a herding dog was used in place of the Retriever or Lab.
We realized that with a lot of care and attention when it came to the breeding and rearing of each of our dogs, We could produce the best possible Doodle Mix. We began to look at the dogs as a whole : Mental, physical & genetic. Every time we go to breed one of our Mama dogs, it is a well thought out process motivated by producing the absolute BEST Puppy we can for a family. We have carefully watched dogs from other breeders growing up in our community and have quickly seen where our expertise and knowledge in canine genetics has benefited us . Our focus has been on maintaining the integrity of the Doodle through only the Poodle Genetics (while other breeders have used MULTI Generational lines which have Labradoodle or Australian labradoodle Genetics) and always being careful that only the best qualities from the accompanying breed is complemented. Paying close attention to temperament and ability in each dog while also taking into account Genotypes for Coat Traits and Color.
Once the puppies are born, we begin the Puppy Culture protocols. We start with daily stimulation and smell cues and by the time they leave us, they are crate trained, leash trained and well adjusted to all the regular paces of life.
Australian Shepherds are FIERCELY loyal (sometimes to a fault) they have great adventurous spirits and have a highly regarded work ethic. When you combine this with the less than serious personality and love of a Poodle, the result can be amazing! With this cross, we have been raising puppies that most are calling Extraordinary. They are up for an adventure, or a hike or they are good to just relax with you after a busy day of work. They are content to just be with you. Of all of our doodles, this is certainly the most sought after. With our attention to detail in genetics and parent pairings, we are regularly producing puppies with the coveted merle patterning.
Like the Aussie, The Old English Sheepdog or "Bobtail" is a herding dog. They are a little less serious than the Aussie and are more on the playful goofy side. This is often a sight to see because of their large lanky bodies. As a purebred, they are a big loveable cuddly teddy bear with ALOT of hair (also triple coated like the aussie), when you add in the Poodle, their structure and confirmation changes and they become much more compact. Like all Shepherd type dogs, OES DO SHED fairly regularly. The introduction of the poodle, when managed correctly, can drastically change their coat. Not ALL Poodles are low shedding so knowing the coat types/traits of the parents will greatly improve your chance of getting a puppy with the correct Doodle Coat.
About 30 years ago I met a Bernedoodle that came to Canada from Europe with his family (yes, this cross breed has been around for much longer than most think!). They had purchased him from a Breeder near their home in The Netherlands who's family had raised Bernese Mountain Dogs for decades. We always thought he had a really different personality, almost like a yearling colt who was refusing to grow up. The family that had him told us that they had always loved the Bernese Mountain dog but they had awful luck when it came to health problems. They said lots of breeders in Europe who bred Bernese Mountain Dogs, also would cross them with The poodles to get a healthier Dog. Fast forward to now, well lets just say we now completely understand why that dog was perpetually a puppy! Both JUNO & GLACIER were not a "treat" to train. It took hours and months of work with both of them to get them crate trained. They both approached everything in life with all 4 paws, literally. Knocking over fully grown adults at the dog park because they weren't aware of their size and ability and they never knew when it was time to turn off the playfulness and be serious. Now, they are both over a year old and are considered "adult dogs", they have AMAZING guardian families and they are finally staring to mature into animals that are aware of themselves and the people they are accountable too. This breed certainly requires a level of consistency and training that should be considered by all who want to adopt one!
This is where things get fun for us. We really have experienced a level of personality with Bernedoodles that we don't like BUT when crossed with the Aussiedoodle, all that craziness and playfulness from the Berner is met with the seriousness of the Aussie. Not to mention the COLORS! We are VERY passionate about Genetics and how DNA can be a great tool for pre planning and understanding what could be. We know from Science and Genetic accountability that there is *NO such thing as a Purebred Merle Poodle so when you merge the Aussiedoodle & Bernedoodle, you introduce this gorgeous ability for the pattern to be present! We ONLY facilitate this mix through the breeding of the Aussiedoodle WITH the Bernedoodle. Some breeders are doing this mix while using a Aussie X Berner to a poodle or they use an Australian Labradoodle in place of the poodle. We believe strongly in the Genetic Vigor the Poodle brings to Both the Aussie and Berner before the merging of these breeds.
*If you wish to dispute this, please show us 10 generations (both genetic and on paper) of a Registered Poodle that is Merle. To date, non have been able to do it because the Merle Pattern in Poodles has been introduced to the breed from other canines and is NOT genetically appropriate to the breed.
The quintessential European Doodle. Three Breeds that have been Loved and held in high regard by the people in Their countries of origin. Both The Berner and The Bobtail are fun loving jovial dogs but again, merging the work ethic of the OES with the giddiness of the Berner does make them more trainable and have a better ability to focus. Given their size (some can get to 140 lbs) they are considered a specialty breed. Because of this, We will only be offering these puppies every couple of years. If this breed sounds like what your family needs, please send us an email and we can begin the interview process.
